A melted bowl of ice cream? What's that have to do with anything. That is the lens that I have decided to look at my life through (and the point of view this blog will be from). To explain how I got to a melted bowl of ice cream, I have to back up a few years ago to give some back story on how my ice cream analogies all started. In March of 2013 we went to Disneyland. Reagan had just turned one, and I was slowly starting to come out of my postpartum depression haze. The first night at the hotel we got a complimentary pint of ice cream (thanks to my Dad's Marriott status). The three of us, Dusty, Rea, and me, sat on the bed and ate the ice cream straight out of the carton. It was my favorite moment of the trip (which is saying a lot if you know how much I love Disneyland). It was a relaxed moment of bliss with my husband and daughter. We laughed and talked and ate yummy ice cream. Since then, I have tried to look for "ice cream moments" in my life. The little simple things that help me to feel true happiness and joy like Reagan reading McKinley a story, Dusty playing hide and seek with the girls, cuddling with Kinley, playing a card game with Reagan, etc. Looking for those "ice cream moments" has helped me enjoy all the good in my life amidst all the crazy.
Recent changes in our family have thrown me for a bit of a loop. As I have tried to adjust to our new normal, I have realized that I still have/can have the things I strive for in our family such as family time, date night, one on one time with girls, mommy time, etc., but the way it plays out in our family is a little unconventional. Dusty's busiest day of the week is Saturday. As a result, our "Saturday" is now Monday. Date night is usually now a mid-morning or early afternoon date. The girls' time to play with Daddy is in the mornings or after lunch or wherever it happens to fit in that week. Our life is like a melted bowl of ice cream. It's messy but still blessed with all the delicious parts we want for our family. A melted bowl of ice cream while not always ideal is still ice cream. It is still a treat and can still be enjoyed. One day our life may be a perfect ice cream sundae, and I'm sure that I will continue to strive for that ideal. But in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy and find contentment in my melted bowl of ice cream one ice cream moment at a time.
